How easy is it to travel to Belize?

It is very easy to travel to and around Belize. You can choose to rent a car, take taxis or shuttles, or the public buses. Click here for more details about traveling in Belize.

Why are your nightly rates lower than other San Ignacio hotels on the Macal River?

Glad you noticed! Our ultimate goal is to live self-sustainably, not to make lots of money. We also don’t have the overhead of larger lodges. Our tax rate is lower due to us only being a lodging business and nothing more. And we don’t charge guests any extra fees, like housekeeping or service fees – many resorts do.

Can you give us directions to get to your place?

What can we bring for the community?

We have partnered with the Pack for a Purpose organization. We collect donated supplies for our local school. We also support C.A.W.S. (Cayo Animal Welfare Society) a local animal welfare organization. Click here to learn more.

Can you help us find things to do?

Absolutely! Here’s a list of 55 Things to Do in San Ignacio! We recommend Belize Caving Expeditions for tours and ground transportation. They pick up and drop off right at our property for NO extra charge! Previous guests have ‘raved’ about then, and they do much more than caving tours.

Is your property kid-friendly?

For children 13 years and older, our property is friendly. We do not have infant or toddler equipment such as playpens, cribs, highchairs, etc. Therefore, parents of very young children might not find the property as accommodating as needed. Children between toddler age and 13 might find there are not enough ‘kid-friendly activities’ on our property. However, you are welcome to inquire with specific questions. We also require children to be supervised at all times.

How many people total can you accommodate?

Our Banana Bungalow can accommodate 2 guests. Our Belize Bungalow can accommodate 4 guests. So, in total, will can accommodate up to 6 people at a time at the jungle lodge, inclusive of children.

Are there places to eat nearby?

There are a few restaurants in our village (and one or two pop-up restaurants usually on the weekends) that serve Belizean food at great prices. Jeff and I can eat for @ $10 U.S. total [not each!] (plus drinks). The local restaurants provide free delivery, and one serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, AND provides pack lunches for day tours if ordered in advance. Another option would be to buy groceries at the shop directly across the road from us and use the full outdoor kitchen to cook your own meals. There are also lots of restaurants in San Ignacio; we’ll share our favorite local spots with you. But if you do want to hit the touristy places we understand.

And Here’s Some More Questions! ?

How many days do we need stay to see everything?

Is that a trick question? We’ve lived here since 2014 and haven’t seen everything yet! However, we recommend at least 4 nights to see the main tourist sites, and some off the beaten path as well. Check out our blog posts for some itinerary ideas.

We also want to stay at a beach location while we are in Belize. Do you have any recommendations?

Glad you asked. Other than the obvious locations like San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia and Hopkins. If you want to head to a smaller island, we highly recommend “Joe Jo’s on the Reef” on Tobacco Caye. Prices are very reasonable and it is definitely an out of the way spot. You can snorkel right from the island on the barrier reef! It’s truly amazing!

What should we pack?

Is there anything we can do within walking distance?

Absolutely! And most are FREE! Visit our local waterfall The Showers, explore our Maya Mound, horseback riding, bike riding, Dining, Grocery Stores, Birding, Churches (x5), The Macal River (swimming, kayaking, tubing) and more!

Should we rent a car?

It depends….. if you are adventurous, you may be able to save some money by driving yourself to most of the tourist sites, pack a lunch, and hire guides on site. You will also have more opportunity to try things off the beaten path (We’ve got a list that would last a month!) However, Belize rental car companies require a deposit on your Credit Card, even if your Credit Card, or Personal Auto Insurance covers rentals. Additionally, the cost of fuel has recently been over $8 U.S. per gallon. Some rental car companies also charge extra if you don’t return the car clean (inside and out). So beware of the ‘hidden’ costs, as they will add up.

Do we have to book through your website?

No, but we guarantee the best prices if you do book direct. We can also be booked via AirBnB, where we are a SuperHost, and we are in the Top 5% of all AirBnB listings. (but you’ll pay at least 15% more if you book through AirBnB.) When you book directly through our secure website you pay online without us ever seeing your Credit Card information. Our Credit Card processor is Stripe.com

What if we don’t rent a car?

We can help with ground transportation throughout most of Belize. Other options are: the village shuttle and bus to/from Cristo Rey/San Ignacio (SI); some tour companies will pick-up and drop-off at our lodge (ask us which ones); take a taxi from the airport to the bus station then a bus to SI and the village shuttle from SI to us.

Do you have a non-smoking bungalow?

Yes, our bungalows are non-smoking/non-vaping. In fact, we are a totally non-smoking/non-vaping property. So, smoking/vaping is not allowed anywhere on the property.

What are some of the more ‘off the beaten path’ things to do in Belize?

Well, in our immediate area there are several off the beaten path adventures. We include an extensive list of things to do in our Digital Guest Guidebook after you make reservation. Is it safe?

A definite yes! Cristo Rey Village is virtually crime-free. As in all cases, some level of vigilance is necessary, especially on tours, in markets, etc. But there’s definitely less of a security issue here than in any major metropolitan area in the U.S. or other countries. What’s the wildlife like?

We have an abundance of wildlife on and near the property – including howler monkeys, toucans, parrots, agoutis, and so much more! You can view dozens of wildlife videos we’ve made right on our property on our YouTube Channel. Be sure to subscribe as we add new videos every week. Yes, there are scorpions, snakes and spiders too, but if you avoid the areas they like to hide out, you’ll be fine.

Are there lots of bugs and mosquitos?

I know it’s hard to believe but where we are in the jungle there really aren’t a lot of bugs or mosquitos, but we recommend packing bug spray, and bring some anti-itch cream, just in case. We do have dragonflies, bats, frogs, and geckos that take care of most of the bugs and mosquitos!

Can we extend our stay or leave early?

We’d love to extend your stay based on availability. And just so you know, the majority of our guests always comment that they wished they spent more time here! So, just let us know and we’ll see if we can make that happen.

What IS that road sign for at the top of this page?

This road sign signifies a ‘speed bump.’ Or in Belize terms, a Sleeping Policeman – or in our village – a Sleeping Policewoman! This used to be one of the more popular tourist photo ops in our village. Unfortunately, when they paved the road, the sign mysteriously disappeared 🙁
